Hello! You’re probably here because you are sick and tired of the current political climate. You hate that you keep getting sucked in to all the collective negative energy. You’re tired of getting stressed out by elected leaders who are acting in outrageous ways. You know they don’t deserve so much of your focus. You want to keep an empowered mindset. If so, you’re in the right place.
In this post I’ll describe why this topic is so relevant to self-care, my own personal experience on election night, the underlying issue behind it, and my recommendations for staying empowered. I was inspired to create a Facebook live stream recently on this same topic. Check it out:
Why this is relevant to self-care
The political climate seems to be elephant in the room in every conversation I’m having these days. Recent events have caused great pain and mental anguish. Many folks are walking around bearing a heavy burden that weighs on them constantly.
The impact of this on your body and mind can be profound. It can easily distract you from the mindset needed to move forward in your life. You see, your ego loves things like Donald Trump or Paul Ryan. It’s very easy to let your ego take over and drag you down. You respond to Trump’s words and actions with nihilism and/or despondency.
My personal experience
I’m reminded of the 2016 Presidential election. I recall the sense of outrage, anger, anxiety and gloom in my community. I had been building great momentum around my business at that time, and the election night news hit me like a ton of bricks. The first few hours I felt mentally and emotionally woozy…
Thankfully, after processing it and speaking with a mentor, I was able to create a more empowering takeaway. I realized that as a holistic health professional, I am needed now more than ever. I need to be a source of leadership and inspiration.
There are obviously a lot of people in pain. Many votes were motivated by fear and feeling unheard. Many others fear the impact of the election’s outcome on the future of our planet and feel heartsick for our most vulnerable populations.
The Underlying Issue
Given all that collective negative energy brewing, It’s useful to stop and remind yourself of the basic underlying issue.
Stop giving away your power to external circumstances
We can’t let Trump’s victory or latest outrageous action make us hopeless. The truth is that we can’t let external circumstances determine our internal mindset. Doing so prevents us from moving forward and living the kickass life we were meant to lead. If we give away our power to external events then life will feel random and meaningless. We’ll constantly be reacting in a powerless way. We’ll be acting as a thermometer rather than a thermostat. That way of living simply does not serve us…
My Recommendation for How to Create an Empowered Mindset
My advice is to pay vigilant attention to your mindset. Be ready to call yourself out when you go down a disempowering path. We all do it. It’s so easy to get fixated on external events and tell a deflating story about them.
When this starts to happen, try doing the following:
- Pause and take a deep breath.
- Consciously choose how you went to be feeling.
- Tell yourself a creative story that interprets the external event in an empowering way.
There’s two options when faced with an undesired external event
- Use it as excuse to allow your energy to sink, feel like a victim, e.g. tell yourself a story that “Trump’s going to blow up the world!” or “The future is hopeless!”
- Dig deeper and tell a more creative story about meaning you give it, e.g. “The world needs my gifts for healing now more than ever.”
Finally, I want to make a recommendation to minimize the likelihood of getting sucked in to negative news. Set a firm boundary regarding how you are going to engage with politics and world news.
If politics inspires you to create, e.g organize a march, write a documentary, that’s wonderful. However it’s not so great if engaging with it leaves you feeling powerless or gloomy. Do you find yourself obsessing over dozens of articles and Facebook posts about a political topic? If so, that’s likely a sign that you should pause, take a deep breath and follow the steps described above.
In conclusion, I hope this article has helped you understand an approach to not letting the Donald Trump’s of the world rob you of your most valuable asset – your empowered mindset.
